Usage, overage, and your spending cap

How Interdatum counts call minutes and texts, what overage costs, and how the monthly overage spending cap pauses outbound calls and texts when it's reached.

The Starter and Pro plans include a set number of call minutes and texts each billing period. This article explains how usage is counted, what extra usage costs, and how the spending cap keeps overage under your control.

Where can I see my usage?

You can see your call minute and text usage in Settings → Billing, in the Usage this period card. The card shows the dates of your current billing period and two progress bars: Call minutes and Texts, each showing how much you've used against your plan's included amount. A bar turns amber at 80% and red once you go over, with a note showing how far over the included amount you are. If your plan is billed, the card also shows Overage so far in CAD. The Usage this period card appears for workspaces on Starter or Pro.

How are call minutes counted?

Interdatum counts call minutes on your business number for both incoming and outgoing calls. Each call is rounded up to the next whole minute, so a 61-second call counts as 2 minutes. Calls that end in voicemail count as normal calls; the voicemail is part of the call and isn't counted separately. Calls with no connected duration count as 0 minutes. Call minutes are counted within your current billing period and compared with your plan's included minutes: 300 on Starter and 1,000 on Pro.

How are texts counted?

Interdatum counts every text sent or received on your business number: incoming and outgoing texts both count toward your included texts. Each message counts as one text. Texts that fail to send are not counted. This includes texts you send from conversations and the inbox, texts sent by automations, and texts received from numbers that aren't clients yet. System notifications that Interdatum sends from its own shared number don't count toward your texts. Included texts are 500 on Starter and 2,000 on Pro per billing period.

How much does overage cost?

Overage is usage beyond the call minutes and texts included in your Starter or Pro plan. Overage costs CA$0.04 per call minute and CA$0.03 per text. Overage is billed on your next invoice, together with your monthly plan fee. The included amounts are 300 minutes and 500 texts on Starter, and 1,000 minutes and 2,000 texts on Pro. Unused included minutes and texts don't carry over to the next billing period. There's no overage during a free trial, and workspaces with a plan provided by Interdatum are never billed overage.

Will I be warned before I go over?

Yes. When your workspace reaches 80% of the included call minutes or 80% of the included texts in a billing period, the workspace owner gets an email showing how much has been used and the overage rate. Each warning is sent once per billing period. If the overage spending cap is reached, the owner also gets an email saying outbound calls and texts are paused. Each email links to Settings → Billing, where you can check the Usage this period card or change your overage spending cap. Workspaces whose plan is provided by Interdatum don't get these warnings.

What is the overage spending cap?

The overage spending cap is the most overage you're willing to pay in one billing period. The cap is set in CAD and defaults to CA$50. You can set the cap anywhere from $0 up to $1,000; set it to $0 if you never want to pay overage. For a cap higher than $1,000, contact Interdatum support.

To change the overage spending cap, go to Settings → Billing, find Monthly overage spending cap (CAD) in the Usage this period card, enter an amount, and click Save cap. Only a workspace owner or admin can change the cap.

What happens when I reach my spending cap?

When your overage reaches the monthly overage spending cap, outbound calls and texts from your business number are paused until your next billing period starts. Interdatum pauses a call or text if billing it would push your overage past the cap. Incoming calls still ring through, and incoming texts are never blocked.

Settings → Billing shows a notice that you've reached your overage spending cap and the date outbound calls and texts resume. If you try to call or text, you'll see a message with the cap amount and the resume date. To resume right away, raise the cap in Settings → Billing and click Save cap.

Is there a daily texting limit?

Yes. Separate from your plan and spending cap, each workspace has a limit on how many texts it can send from its business number in any 24-hour period. If you reach the daily texting limit, you'll see a message that the workspace has reached its limit of texts in 24 hours. Try again later, or contact [email protected] to raise the limit. The daily texting limit applies to texts sent from your business number, including texts sent by automations, and doesn't depend on your included texts.

What happens if my payment fails?

If Interdatum can't charge your card for your Starter or Pro plan, your payment is past due. The workspace owner gets an email, and Settings → Billing shows a Payment past due badge. You have a 7-day grace period in which outbound calls and texts keep working. Update your payment method with Manage billing in Settings → Billing before the grace period ends. If the grace period ends without payment, outbound calls and texts from your business number pause (and Pro AI features pause) until you update your payment method. Incoming calls still ring through.
